Hidden Messages of the Urbanism

Yudai

There are many hidden messages in the urban area to evict homeless people. My media project illustrates this fact by creating a collage that integrates various elements that indirectly attacking people living on the street. At the top of this picture there are strong lights deliberately placed to prevent people from sleeping under the elevated structure, and at the bottom there are defensive arts that act to the exclusion of certain people. Unfortunately, not only such elements but also some defensive movements are confirmed in Japan, especially the Tokyo Olympic period.

Some cases of eviction were reported in the vicinity of competition venues and planned torch relay sites, including the closure of sleeping areas, removal of luggage and the installation of warning signs and flares. The hidden movement in these matters is that Tokyo Metropolitan Government may desires to show people from abroad intentionally that there are not homeless and to promote Tokyo as a clean city to the rest of the world. It is a natural obligation that the host city should not have a negative impact on the lives and livelihoods of the people, but the Tokyo Olympics were disconnected from the lives of the people and lacked a comprehensive urban perspective.

The exclusion of vulnerable people and environmental injustice that is happening all around us requires the whole community to identify problems and move towards improvement. In order to do this, people need to become aware of their discomfort with the city they live in. And realizing a sustainable form of community-wide management is what we can do and is the essence of what is needed in the cities of the future.
